EU-Africa PerMed achieved results and impacts.

The EU-Africa PerMed project’s main aim included, as an important objective, to integrate African countries into ICPerMed (International Consortium of Personalised Medicine). This will help foster joint Personalised Medicine (PM) projects and programmes between Europe and Africa, strengthen bilateral EU-AU Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) relations in the area of health and therefore contribute to a successful implementation of PM in the global context. The project has brought together Stakeholders from Europe and various regions of Africa, dialogues and discussions have been facilitated to understand the gaps and guide policy for PM. On the long run, incorporating African countries in the global PM agenda will ensure equity by reducing health disparities between developed and developing countries, as well as facilitate access of African countries to new tools and technologies that have the potential to make healthcare more efficient to better tackle the growing global burden of infectious diseases and non-infectious diseases.

After 4,5 years of work, the main project results and outcomes, grouped based on the typology of the typology of expected impact are summarised below:

  1. Scientific impact. Advancing knowledge: mapping and describing the African PM landscape; Integrating African funding organisations in ERA PerMed (funding activities).
  2. Policy and scientific impact. Exchange with stakeholders and identification of PM needs and common interests.
  3. Policy and scientific impact: The EU-Africa PerMed Action Plan.
  4. Policy impact: Integration of 4 African organisations in ICPerMed and ERA PerMed.
  5. Scientific and capacity building impact: Creating international scientific networks and advancing young researchers’ careers.
  6. Policy and social impact: Raising awareness about PM in Africa and the importance of international collaboration.
