Southern African Regional Stakeholder Workshop
Identifying gaps, needs and areas of collaboration in Personalized Medicine

The one and half-day Southern African workshop on Personalised Medicine (PM) was organised by the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) together with the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) on behalf of the EU-Africa PerMed Project, to discuss the PM agenda in the Southern African region. The aim and objective were to develop an action plan on how to pursue the agenda in the region. The workshop was attended by more than 50 invited participants, who included key stakeholders from, South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. EU-Africa PerMed project consortium members and members of the Project advisory board.
The Southern African Regional Stakeholder Workshop was organised as part of the activities expected the EU-Africa PerMed consortium to carry out, to explore and analyse the gaps and needs for PM research and innovation within Southern African regional countries. This conveyed the potential and advantages of collaboration between Southern African regional countries with Europe in the field of PM and identify areas of mutual interest. The workshop provided a platform to interact with stakeholders from the Southern African region and organised regional representation in future activities of the project.
The meeting objective addressed Personalized Medicine (PM) topics in Southern Africa which included:
- Review the landscape of PM in the Southern African region
- Identify gaps and needs for developing PM in the region.
- Identify and prioritize areas of interest in the region.
- Reflect on models of consortium for developing PM in the region (governance, funding partnerships, and training programs, etc.)
- Identify challenges and opportunities for collaboration with international regions such as Europe.
